Resources for Learning the Game of Bridge

There are so many resources for learning the game of bridge. My list includes some of my favorite articles, web sites and books that focus on topics for developing players. I am always interested in new material. Please let me know your favorites.

Practice Play of the Hand

Bridge Master is a challenging game designed to improve your declarer play. You get to choose from a series of instructional deals to play. You are always declarer. The deals are carefully constructed to provoke you to find the best possible play; if you take the correct line of play you will always make your contract. On the other hand, if you make any mistake, the program will always defend perfectly and defeat your contract. A "Show solution" button is available to explain the correct play. Go to BridgeBaseOnline.com and sign in. (Registration is free.) You can find BridgeMaster under Solitaire or Practice or use this link.

Just Declare is a simplified version of bridge where you always play the hand, and the contracts are pre-determined. All contracts are makeable. Play as much as you like, at your own pace. The highest scorers are listed on a leaderboard.  The leaderboard resets daily. Go to BridgeBaseOnline.com and sign in. (Registration is free.) You can find Just Declare under Solitaire or use this link.

Vu-Bridge is a subscription-based set of products for learning and practicing bridge. It is your online mentor, guiding you on how to think at the bridge table. I am most familiar with the V-Blue Newsletter product. Go to VuBridge.com.

Mini-Bridge has no bidding. You need to read the cards and decide what contract you think is possible. It's just practice. Go to BridgeBaseOnline.com and sign in. (Registration is free.) You can find Mini-Bridge under Practice or use this link for ACBL members.

Articles/Websites
  • What's Standard
This is a set of articles on Audrey Grant's website, BetterBridge.com. They were written by David Lindop from 2003 to 2009. The information has adequate depth and has aged well.

  • Adventures in Bridge
Robert Todd is now a regular contributor to ACBL's Bridge Bulletin monthly magazine. He has been delivering articles on his website for years. The articles vary in depth, but he writes very clearly. The topics address all levels of players.
